There’s something special about summer in Smith County. Maybe it’s the way weekends fill up with community events, the sound of kids laughing in the park, or the fact that nearly every gathering feels like a reunion. Around here, summer isn’t just a season, it’s a showcase of what makes rural living so meaningful.

And honestly? One look at the June calendar tells the story.

On Saturday, June 6 alone, Smith County will be buzzing with activity. While it may make event planners laugh (and maybe stress a little!) to see multiple major events land on the same day, it also says something important: this is a vibrant, active, connected community.

Whether you’re a longtime resident, visiting family, or considering rural life, here’s your guide to summer in Smith County.

Start Summer Strong: Pathway to Wellness Launch Event

One of the biggest highlights this summer is the Pathway to Wellness Launch Event, happening from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 6, 2026.

Smith Center Fitness Court

This event celebrates wellness, movement, and community connection with activities for all ages, including:

  • Fitness Court demos

  • A kids obstacle course

  • Sidewalk chalk fun

  • A food truck

  • Walking loop prizes

  • Family-friendly activities throughout the morning

At the center of it all is the Fitness Court, a feature that’s quickly becoming a point of pride for Smith Center and the entire county.

And for good reason.

The Fitness Court isn’t just another piece of equipment. It’s a statement about the kind of rural community Smith County is becoming. It’s free to use 24/7, visually striking with its accompanying art wall, and offers a wellness amenity many larger communities don’t even have.

In fact, noted Kansas storyteller and travel advocate Marci Penner is including the Fitness Court in the online Kansas Guidebook. Visitors are already taking notice. One recent traveler from Colorado shared that her community has nothing comparable.

For families and individuals seeking rural living without sacrificing quality-of-life amenities, the Fitness Court is a true “wow” moment.

A Full Saturday in Smith County

The June 6 calendar also includes several other major community events happening throughout the county:

The Smith County Health Department’s Community Baby Shower will take place that same morning, offering support, resources, and connection for young and growing families.

Meanwhile, the Chamber golf tournament will bring another crowd together for a classic summer tradition and a day of networking, recreation, and community support.

Yes, it’s a packed Saturday, but that’s also the beauty of small-town life in Smith County. There is genuine energy here. Different organizations are creating opportunities for people of all ages and interests to gather, connect, and enjoy the season together.

The Small-Town Staples of Summer

Of course, no summer in Smith County would be complete without two longtime favorites: the community pool and the county fair.

The Smith Center swimming pool continues to be a summertime staple for local families, offering a zero-entry pool that is welcoming and accessible for all ages. Visitors can enjoy plenty of shade options, general seating, and lounge chairs for relaxing poolside throughout the day.

Excitement is also building as a brand-new bathhouse nears completion, bringing even more improvements to the facility.

Admission remains affordable for families, with rates at just $1 for children ages 6 and under and $3 for youth ages 7 and up and adults. Season passes are also available for $35 individually or $80 for families. Even better, these admission prices are locked in through the 2030 season as part of the new construction project, helping ensure the pool remains an affordable summer destination for years to come.

And then there’s the county fair, a true rural tradition woven into the fabric of the community. Fair week brings together generations through livestock shows, exhibits, rides, food, competitions, and late nights catching up with neighbors. Around here, the fair isn’t just an event on the calendar, it’s part of what defines summer.

This year's county fair takes placeJuly 16-20, 2026.

These are the experiences that continue to make small-town living feel special.

Summer Traditions You Don’t Want to Miss

As summer continues, the calendar stays full with beloved local traditions that bring the community together year after year.

Lebanon Bash

A longtime favorite in the region, the Lebanon Bash is one of those can’t-miss summer celebrations that draws people from across the area. Expect community spirit, entertainment, and the kind of small-town atmosphere that keeps people coming back.

Old Settlers’ Day

Another hallmark event of the season is Old Settlers’ Day, a celebration packed with hometown pride and tradition. One exciting highlight each year is the community color run, bringing energy and fun to the festivities.
