Apprenticeship Program – Gas Utility Technician

Job Description
This position is based in Smith Center, Kansas.
The Apprenticeship Program is a structured training program designed to provide new field employees with the training and hands-on experience needed to safely and properly complete job duties.
The program includes gas distribution, field service, and gas operations, with a strong focus on safety. Training areas include excavation, fire extinguishers, hazard communication, respiratory protection, personal protective equipment (PPE), and safe vehicle operation.
Functions of this job will include, but are not limited to:
Safely operating company equipment
Ability to perform general construction labor related to installation of main lines, service renewals, and line replacement
Troubleshooting and investigating gas leaks
First responder to leaks - reacting immediately to emergency situations to prevent injury to self and others
Examining and inspecting gas appliances and performing re-lights
Accurately communicating company policies and procedures and assisting customers with inquiries while on site

Job Requirements
Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid driver’s license, and a CDL or the ability to successfully obtain a CDL during the 180-day probationary period.
This position requires someone who is detail-oriented, self-motivated, safety-conscious, and a team player. Candidates must be able to perform essential physical job functions, follow procedures carefully, and process information in an organized, timely, and accurate manner.
The successful candidate must be able to work shift work, weekends, holidays, overtime, and emergency situations. Candidates are required to respond to the service center within 30 minutes. Overtime and rotating callout will be required as needed.
Experience in the gas industry, construction environment, or working knowledge of safety procedures such as OSHA and Pipeline Safety is preferred.
